Official start of Mine Free Sarajevo 2020 project

Start of the implementation of „Mine Free Sarajevo 2020“ project was officially announced on April 4th when the world's attention was focused on the problem of landmines. In beautiful premises of the Sarajevo City Hall, hosted by the Mayor of Sarajevo Mr. Abdulah Skaka, the Press conference was held to inform the public on the official start of the project. In the introductory speech the Ambassador of the United States of America in Bosnia and Herzegovina, His Excellency Eric Nelson, stated this is the largest donation of the USA Government to a specific demining project in the last 10 years. 
„The United States of America is proud to be the donor to the Sarajevo-free mine project, because this brilliant initiative aims to free Sarajevo and East Sarajevo from a legacy of war. Our desire and goal is to overcome ideological and rhetorical minefields that do not allow citizens to find peace in themselves they deserve, as well as the strength and courage to go on" said US Ambassador Nelson. 
Total of 8 million square meters will be released through this Land Release project. At the press conference, present were the mayors of municipalities that will be declared free of mines through this project, and those are municipalities Stari Grad, East Stari Grad, East Ilidža, Vogošća and Novi Grad. 
Mayor Skaka stated how important this project is for future of Sarajevo and East Sarajevo, mainly because Sarajevo region will finally be free of mines and safe for its citizens and visitors and thanked the USA for supporting mine action in Bosnia and Herzegovina and namely Mine Free Sarajevo 2020 project. 
Nermin Hadžimujagić, Director of MDDC also gave a speech emphasizing the importance of this project and all partners involved in this initiative like The Marshall Legacy Institute, and ITF Enhancing Human Security.
